There are many forms of payment

for dental services; dental insurance is just one. Dental
insurance is an agreement for payment of dental services
provided that is obtained by you, a group of which you
are a member, a government agency, or an employer.
Other forms of payment are checks, credit or debit cards,
grants, government subsidies, etc.. It is not the only form
of payment, but is or can be added on with these other
forms of payment.

Fee schedule vs. Fee Guide:

A fee schedule is a list of
items and the amount of money paid for that procedure.
Currently, MSP (Medical Service Plan) is a scheduled fee
list. A fee guide is a list of procedures and the amount of
money recommended but not mandated to charge for that
procedure. The BC College of Dental Surgeons fee guide is
an example. The fees charged by a dentist are based on
the costs of running his/her business NOT a mandated
fee amount.

Recommended treatment vs. Paid treatment:

There are enumerable dental plans: not just one or two. Each plan has a set of criteria, a payment structure and limits, to mention a few of the variables that affect payments issued by that plan for services submitted. I accept most nationally recognized plans as a courtesy but not as the only source of payment. The ultimate responsibility for payment resides with you, the patient. I do not treatment plan according to a dental plan’s coverage; I treatment plan according to your oral health needs. Does this mean that I don’t consider the implications of dental coverage? No, of course, I realize that you want to minimize your out of pocket costs. Don’t we all and to that end, I make every attempt to maximize your coverage to your advantage. However, it has been my experience that a denial of payment for a recommended service is viewed by patients as a judgment of the validity of the service recommended; the dental plan is the arbiter (judge) of the recommended treatment which they are not. Their denial is based on their interpretation of your dental plan’s criteria for service payment agreed to by you or your employer when it was purchased. The difference between the two positions is the responsibility. The plan is responsible for the payment of services that are performed and meet their criteria for payment, whereas I am responsible for your health and recommending the services that I believe will improve or maintain it.

Employment by a dental plan:

It has been expressed
throughout my career that people believe that I am
employed by their dental plan. This idea is completely
erroneous. I do not work for any dental insurance
company. If appointments are missed, I cannot bill the
insurance company for lost time. I try very hard to
respect your time and expect the same from my patients.
That being said, we are not machines on an assembly line.
Life happens and each of us needs to be flexible

The ultimate responsibility for
services rendered is yours. I try very hard to outline all
the potential costs of treatment before beginning, but it
should be noted that this is an outline of services; it is an
estimate NOT a guarantee. Situations may change as
dictated by the clinical realities of the time. Remember
that you are not a machine with replaceable parts, but a
human being with health issues.
